collecting istanbul's disappearing shop signs, one photo at a time.

Letters that glow

neon eczane sign off tarlabaşı bulvarı, gone since january, sitting next to luca's carousel piece now — different kind of flicker but same argument about light holding still when it shouldn't. added it without thinking twice.

Letters that glow

moved the salt flats fabric piece into letters that glow, not sure it belongs but the black square eats light the same way the tarlabaşı sign used to at dusk. kept meaning to date that photo. sometime in march, i think.

Before the rebrand

not sure why the danby engraver card ended up next to the ai robot vase but they're both about labor pretending to still matter. added a step stool from a shuttered hardware shop on kutucular cad., gone since march.

Letters that glow

neon on kurtuluş caddesi, dated it to '78 before the shutter went up last week. spok's tennis sign stays in though, still can't explain why that loop keeps pulling me back.

Letters that glow

not sure these belong together yet but the neon on kemeraltı caddesi keeps bleeding into everything else i look at lately. added the rhodes ceramics thing mostly for the glaze, not the history. still missing a good photo of the tuğrul eczanesi sign before they take it down.

Shopfronts

not sure how these got in here, none of this belongs in shopfronts. still looking for the tailor sign from kurtuluş, the one on sakızağacı sokak, gone since march. will clean this up later.

Before the rebrand

not sure why the elephant's trunk nebula ended up in here between hokusai and a moneygram sign but the pull is the same, something about to be swallowed by light. saw the miami storefront and thought of tarlabaşı, 2019, before they gutted it.
